All blood is made up of same basic elements but all the blood groups are not same. There are eight different common blood types which are determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens – substances that can trigger an immune response. There are 8 blood groups-A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+ and AB-. The universal red cell donor has Type O negative blood type. The universal plasma donor has Type AB blood type. O positive is the most common blood type. Depending on which blood type you have, your immune system will produce antibodies to react against other blood types. AB blood group has higher risk of cardiovascular disease than other blood groups. Type 2 diabetes is more likely to develop in those with type A and B blood. People with type O blood have a degree of protection against the most dangerous form of malaria.
